This past February, the family of organizer Megan Odett was struck by an unexpected crisis when one of the Odett children, known in social media as KidA, was diagnosed with childhood leukemia.

We're happy to report that KidA is responding well to treatment and that the biking community in DC and elsewhere went above and beyond to help the Odetts during the dreadful first weeks after KidA's diagnosis.

For obvious reasons, we were not able to sustain our usual schedule of events this year. We hope that as KidA's ongoing treatment becomes less intensive this winter, we'll be able to resume awesomeness-as-usual next spring with the ABC's of Family Biking and a full calendar of family-friendly bike rides for kids of all ages.

In the meantime, please stay tuned for news about the one ride we will be doing this fall -- the first international Kidical MASSive ride. On September 19th 2015, families around the United States and the United Kingdom will ride together in spirit to demonstrate that kids are traffic too. Many of the Kidical Mass groups in the Greater Washington region will participate in this ride, so check back for more information and to find a ride near you!

If you want to check in with the Odetts personally about KidA's recovery, you can email Megan at the Kidical Mass DC email address. The Odetts are grateful to accept all forms of well-wishes, prayers, and healing thoughts.Kidical Mass DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05856087853345083948noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753397532360847306.post-28498576701202532532014-10-16T10:19:00.002-04:002014-10-16T10:44:45.564-04:00Saturday, October 25: Cider and doughnuts and COSTUMES!

All-around awesome mom Elizabeth has scored us a coveted pool party spot at the PG Pool (just over the line in Prince George’s County) for Sunday, July 6. Though there is normally a fee for non-members to attend parties at PG Pool, thanks to the generosity of BicycleSPACE’s yoga program, we are able to offer this party FREE to all Kidical Mass riders.

The details:

We’ll meet at Turkey Thicket Rec Center (the parking lot, Michigan Avenue side) at 10:00am on Sunday, July 6. From there we’ll ride to the PG Pool in Mt. Rainier -- about 3 miles. Space is limited -- we’re allowed a maximum of 35 people at the party -- so please sign up on this form to let us know you’re coming.

What you need to know about the pool:

Glass containers are strictly forbidden on the grounds of the PG Pool.

Swim diapers are required for children who aren’t potty trained yet.

You should bring your own lunch to the Pool. UPDATE: We had originally indicated that PG Pool had a snack bar and offered grilled foods for sale. That is not the case, so PLEASE be sure to bring lunch for your family!

Tour
de Fat is a wacky, whimsical and family friendly festival and
celebration of bicycling. Tour de Fat is FREE and open to the public.
The day is jam-packed with live music and entertainment, local vendors,
interactive bicycle activities, and of course beer! This ballyhoo of
bicycles and beer is sponsored by the New Belgium Brewing Co, makers of Fat Tire beer.

All proceeds from beer and souvenir sales benefit WABA, Black Women Bike DC, Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts, and Phoenix Bikes.

We'll have two meetup points for our ride: 9:30am at the head of the
Metropolitan Branch Trail at Chocolate City Brewery and 10:00am at the
west side of Stanton Park in Capitol Hill. We'll arrive at the Tour de
Fat at 10:30am, in plenty of time to register for the gigantic group
bike ride that kicks off the Tour de Fat every year. (You can pre-register online here). The suggested donation is $5 per adult rider.

Costumes are strongly encouraged--we'll be bringing bike decorating supplies to help you make a statement with your bike!
This year it talks nonstop, it's almost potty-trained, and it has definite opinions on what it's going to wear.

Oh, and it doesn't want to take its afternoon nap. :-)

So what can you get a three-year-old family biking event that already has the coolest partners, the most loyal supporters, and the cutest photostream in the world?

Simple: you get it a documentary film.

That's right! We are partnering with Stone Soup Films to create a short documentary film about The ABC's of Family Biking. Stone Stone Soup Films has selected The ABC's of Family Biking as one of the subjects of its "Doc-in-a-Day" festival. We are so excited to work with them on this project!Kidical Mass DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05856087853345083948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753397532360847306.post-11802700815764618322014-03-11T23:24:00.002-04:002014-03-11T23:24:41.994-04:00Save the Date: the ABC's of Family Biking is May 3!The ABC's of Family Biking will return for the third year on Saturday, May 3. We'll start at Stanton Park on Capitol Hill (where last month's Cupcake Ride began) and ride through NoMa and Eckington to end at Chocolate City Brewery, where we'll enjoy complimentary apple cider (thanks, WABA!) and the option to eat tiny hamburgers from the DC Sliders Truck.

Moms and Dads who want to partake of more adult beverages can sample beers and purchase growlers from one of DC's best-known craft breweries. Apple cider is free for all riders, compliments of WABA's Women & Bicycles program.

On Saturday, September 28, over 40 kids and adults met in Stanton Park
on Capitol Hill to undertake a leisurely ride to Georgetown Waterfront
Park and enjoy cupcakes from the world-famous Sprinkles Bakery. The
girls led the charge all the way with ladies from ages 6 to 30 honing
their traffic riding skills and setting some new personal records for
distance. Randall Myers, a member of WABA's Board and the DC Bicycle Advisory Council, accompanied the ride and remarked that it was
an eye-opening illustration of the challenges of biking with kids in the city. Afterwards, our riders consumed a heroic number of cupcakes from
Kidical Mass DC organizer Megan Odett's kid-hauling cargo bike,
temporarily converted to a cupcake delivery vehicle. A fabulous time was
had by all.
At 10:00am on Saturday, September 28, we'll gather at Stanton Park in the heart of Capitol Hill and take an easy, no-drop ride through the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial and then up to the Georgetown Waterfront Park. At the Park, kids can run around and we'll have ample space to park our bikes. Then all you have to do is enjoy the scenery--we'll fetch cupcakes from the famous Sprinkles bakery and bring them to you!

Lunch is up to you--pack a picnic, pick something up in Georgetown, or just make your cupcake your lunch. We won't judge.

Accompanying us on this ride will be Andrea Adleman, a member of WABA's Women & Bikes program whose award-winning article on cupcakes helped document the ongoing popularity of cupcakes in DC. Got cupcake questions? Andrea's your go-to expert.

After lunch, anyone who's interested can take a quick trip to to the canal to see the vestiges of the old lock system that enabled boats to navigate canals over uneven ground--and see where the C&O Canal Towpath Trail begins.

Click here to RSVP and order your cupcakes. Kid-friendly mini-cupcakes are $2 each; regular cupcakes are $3. You must respond by noon on Thursday, September 26 in order to be assured a cupcake! We'll pick up some extras for the last-minute types, but responding by the deadline is the only way to be guaranteed a cupcake in your preferred flavor.
As I wrote elsewhere, I became pregnant with our second child this past fall. Although he was due in early July, things did not quite go as planned, and I
started developing complications the very day after the ABC's of Family Biking in April. After two weeks in and out of the hospital, our son Davey was
born seven weeks premature on May 14. Davey spent two weeks in the NICU,
but he's been home for over a month now, completely healthy and gaining weight like a
bodybuilder. I can't say enough to thank our friends--especially those
in the DC biking community--who pitched in with help and emotional
support just when we needed it the most.
share the tips, tricks and tools that enable them to bicycle with their
children
- a special class on creating and organizing "biketrains" to help children bike to and from school in supervised groups
- exhibits by local bike shops and dealers demonstrating the range of tools and equipment available for family biking.

PLUS this year, we're going to try something new: a "Swap or Sell" for secondhand kids' bikes and cycling equipment.

What can you do to be a part of this fun event? I'm so glad you asked!

First and most importantly, we need exhibitors for the Show-and-Tell portion of the program,
the heart of the ABC's of Family Biking. While we're happy to feature
all sorts of biking arrangements and equipment, we would especially like
to see at least one of each of the following:

- Front-mounted seat (iBert, Yepp, BOBike Mini)
- Rear-mounted seat (Yepp, Topeak, Peanut Shell etc.)
- Trail-a-bike
- Trailer (Chariot, Burley, Wike)
- Longtail cargo bike (Surly Big Dummy, Xtracycle Free Radical, Xtracycle Radish, Yuba Mundo)
- Bakfiets/boxbike
- Cargo trike
- Independent kids' bike

Did
you build your own kids' bike seat (you know who you are!) or make a
really cool DIY mod to an existing product? Come and show off your mad
skills!

We could also use a few people to help with check-in, setup, and cleanup. Everyone
who helps out with the event as a volunteer or Show & Tell
demonstrator will receive as a thank-you gift their own copy of "Taking the Lane: Childhood," a collection of meditations on bikes and childhood edited by Portland bike author Elly Blue.

I'm excited to be bringing this event back to DC after last year's great turnout. If you're interested in joining the event as a Show & Tell demonstrator, a business (all bike shops are welcome! We have TABLES this time!), or other type of volunteer, fill out this quick survey so we can make sure there's space for everyone.

Thanks, happy riding, and I look forward to seeing you next month!Kidical Mass DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05856087853345083948noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753397532360847306.post-70136961000911880322013-03-15T13:03:00.001-04:002013-03-15T13:03:25.590-04:00ABC's of Family Biking 2013Yes, friends, the ABC's of Family Biking will return this year!

The event will take place on Sunday, April 28 from 11am to 1pm at the parking lot of Capitol Hill Montessori School at Logan (215 G Street NE). Once again, it will be a joint effort between Kidical Mass DC, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, and the District Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program.

We are still working on some of the final details, but I can tell you one thing: our motto for this year is BIGGER AND BETTER.

Can't wait to see you there!Kidical Mass DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05856087853345083948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753397532360847306.post-84803099336101845792012-10-23T10:31:00.002-04:002012-10-23T10:33:09.365-04:00FINAL Kidical Mass Ride of 2012: 10/27/2012 to the Zoo!Can you believe it's October already? Falling leaves! Pumpkins! And, of course, Halloween!

We'll
have our final Kidical Mass ride of 2012 this Saturday, October 27.
Alex and I will be converting our Big Orange Bike into a pirate ship,
complete with Jolly Roger flag, and I encourage you to bring your own
fun bike-inspired costumes. We'll have a costume contest with copies of
bike journalist Elly Blue's new book about bikes and childhood (and maybe some other goodies) as prizes!

For this month's ride we will bike to the National Zoo.
I've biked there a few times, always going the "hard way" up
Connecticut Avenue; but thanks to Friends of the Ride Tim, Lori and
Reina, we have a new kid-friendly route that ends conveniently close to
the Children's Zoo!

This ride will have three meetups:

Eckington (Met Branch Trail @ R Street NE): 10:30am

Edgewood/Brookland (Met Branch Trail @ Franklin Street NE, near Chocolate City Brewing Company): 10:45am

Columbia Heights (Columbia Heights Circle at 14th Street & Park Road NW): 11:15am

arrive at Zoo: 11:30am. Costume contest judging.

Route map is here.

Total distance (R Street to Zoo entrance): 4.5 miles

Difficulty: Intermediate. We will ride on the sidewalk for the Michigan Ave/Washington Hospital Center section.

I hope to see you out this Saturday.

Thank you all for joining us for a splendid biking season!Kidical Mass DChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05856087853345083948noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3753397532360847306.post-29204546600708522742012-09-13T12:19:00.002-04:002012-09-13T12:19:58.301-04:00Next Ride, Saturday September 15: H Street Festival! We took a survey late last week about where people would prefer to ride for the September Kidical Mass ride, and it looks like the "H's" have it! We'll taking a very easy ride from Turkey Thicket Rec Center in Brookland to the H Street NE Festival to enjoy the many sights, sounds, smells and tastes that this fabulous street festival offers. The ride will start at Turkey Thicket at 11:15am on Saturday morning and will head down the Met Branch Trail and through NoMa and Near Northeast before finding a place to park on the North side of the H Street NE Festival (I'll try to find out if there will be more bike racks for the Festival).

Since the route is so easy and largely consists of trails, bike lanes and quiet residential streets, this is a GREAT ride for novice cyclists, parents new to cycling with their children, kids, and anyone who wants to practice their street riding skills in a friendly (and slow-moving!) group.

The H Street Festival is one of my favorite street festivals in DC, featuring lots of great food, entertainment for all ages, and booths from fun organizations and vendors, including two of our favorite bike shops, BicycleSPACE and The Daily Rider. You can check out the Washington Post's recommendations on festival highlights here; a list of the performances on the Family Stage is here (scroll down).

As a suggested trip to the National Zoo also saw a late-election surge in last week's poll, we'll be taking a trip there next month. Maybe with an animal-themed costume contest? We'll see!
designated National Historical Landmark--is hosting a Bike Carnival as
part of its "Season of Discovery" during summer 2012. The festival will
feature a kids' bike rodeo, a bike decoration station, the chance to
take a self-guided tour on campus streets that have been shut down
especially for this event, and a family bike parade to wrap up the
festivities.

We will follow a similar route to our "Tour de Fat" ride from
June--heading south from Brookland (Edgewood, really) along the Met Branch Trail to 4th
Street and then 11th Street, which we'll follow to the Southeast Waterfront. There, we'll
cross the Anacostia River on the 11th Street Bridge and spend a short time
on the beautiful, peaceful Anacostia Riverfront Trail before cutting
through the heart of Historic Anacostia. If you've never seen the "Big
Chair" in person, now's your chance!

We'll be aiming to arrive at the Carnival around 12:00 noon. I will lead a return biketrain at a time to be determined by the group, probably after some of the afternoon festivities such as the bike raffle and Family Bike Parade.

You can catch up with the group in:

Edgewood at 10:45am (8th St. NE & Franklin St. NE near Chocolate City Brewing Company)

Eckington, 11:00am (R Street NE @ Met Branch Trail)

NoMa, 11:15am (M Street NE @ Met Branch Trail)

Capitol Hill 11:30pm (Stanton Park @ 4th Street NE)

This ride will be almost 7 miles one-way, so I'm rating it as advanced
(best suited for adults and older children, with little kids as
passengers); however, the route itself is fairly easy, relying mainly on
bike lanes and paved, separated trails. Once again, we'll start out at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center in Brookland and coast downhill along the Met Branch Trail. Argonaut, one of H Street's most kid-friendly dining establishments.

We'll have <strike>three</strike> four meetups <strike>plus one optional meetup (depending on local interest)</strike>: one at Turkey Thicket in Brookland, one at Met Branch Trail and R Street NE, and one at the southern terminus
of the Met Branch Trail. If anyone from Capitol Hill or Near Northeast

a slight detour to pick up more friends at the front of J.O. Wilson Elementary School at 6th Street NE and K Street NE.
Events include a bike parade, a "slow bike" competition and a celebratory car-for-bike trade. Best of all, costumes are encouraged!

New Belgium is making a real effort to incorporate families through event planning and by holding the Tour de Fat at at Yards Park, the latest addition to DC's family-friendly parks. If your little ones get tired of admiring all the bike wackiness, you can cool off in Yards Park's new wading pool!

We'll be riding as a convoy with multiple meetup points, starting at Turkey Thicket in Brookland and heading south along the Met Branch Trail, with a brief pause at R Street NE to meet with anyone who wants to join. We're adding a new stop at Stanton Park, in case any of our Capitol Hill friends would like to join us.
